How We Work

We know that switching accountants feels like
more of a hassle than it probably is. This is what
happens when you come to us

Benson Wood team discussing switching accountants

Switching accountants is
easier than you think.

Changing accountants isn’t something most people look forward to. A lot of the firms that come to us have been with the same accountant for years. They’re not necessarily happy with the service, but the thought of changing accountants feels complicated and overwhelming.

They have very real concerns, like:

  • What happens to everything mid-year?
  • Will something get missed in the handover?
  • Is it going to take up lots of time they don’t have?

In practice, it’s almost always much simpler than people expect, because we manage the whole thing.

We make sure you feel looked after, not passed around or left wondering what is happening.

In simple terms, we help businesses get sorted, keep things right, and take them forward.

What we’re not

Who we are

Reactive, backward-looking, full of jargon
Here all year, and easy to reach when something comes up
The accountant you only hear from when something’s due
Properly interested in where your business is going
A firm that sends you figures and leaves you to work them out
Straight-talking, proactive and forward-looking

How we work with you

The Discovery Call

Everything starts with a conversation. We get to know your business, where things stand, and what you’re trying to achieve. There’s no obligation and no sales pitch. You’ll come away with a clearer picture of whether we’re the right fit.

The Proposal

If it feels right on both sides, we put a clear written proposal together within 48 hours. You’ll know exactly what’s included and what it costs. You sign it through our online system, along with a direct debit mandate and an authority letter that lets us contact your previous accountant on your behalf.

Getting started

From there we take over. We get in touch with your previous accountant, gather everything we need, and get your accounts set up on Xero. The whole onboarding process usually takes two to four weeks. We check in with you along the way and you’ll meet your dedicated client manager before we’re done.

You hear from us regularly

This is where it feels different from what you’re probably used to. Depending on your level of support, that means monthly or quarterly Growth Reports reviewed with you face to face, an annual Business Roadmap broken down month by month, pre year-end tax planning, and a team that’s easy to get hold of when something comes up.

What happens next

You’ll know where you stand before you commit.

The process is designed to make switching feel manageable from the first conversation onwards. We explain what happens, put the proposal in writing, handle the handover, and keep you updated as things move across.

No pressure, no jargon, and no leaving you to chase the details yourself.

FAQs

Changing accountants is simpler than most people expect. Once you sign your proposal with us, we write to your previous accountant requesting your records and professional clearance, register with HMRC as your new agent, and manage the whole handover. You don’t need to be involved in most of it. The process usually takes two to four weeks.

Yes, you can change at any point in the year. There’s no requirement to wait until your year end, though that’s often the tidiest time to make the move. We manage the whole handover and work out the most practical timing with you.

No. Once you instruct us, we write to your previous accountant on your behalf. This is standard professional practice, and they’re obliged to cooperate with the handover and pass across your records.

Changing accountants costs nothing. You’ll settle any outstanding fees with your previous accountant as you normally would, and our fees start from the point we begin acting for you.

We get to know your business, and where you want to take it, and you get to know us and the way we work. It’s a free, no-obligation conversation, usually around 30 minutes. You’ll come away with a clearer picture of whether we’re the right fit, with no pressure either way.

We’re based in Bellshill, Lanarkshire and prefer to meet in person where we can. Most clients find it makes a difference, especially at the start. We work with firms across Lanarkshire and Central Scotland though, and are flexible about how we meet once the relationship is established.

The best way is a short discovery call. We’ll ask about your business, where things stand and what you need. If we’re not the right fit, we’ll say so. If we are, we’ll tell you what that looks like and what it costs before you commit to anything.

Fees vary depending on the size of the business and what’s included. We provide a clear fixed-fee proposal within 48 hours of your discovery call, so you know exactly what you’re paying before you commit to anything.
