JR Benson & Co is formed
Jim Benson forms JR Benson & Co, bringing together John Benson & Co and John Henry & Son. Alongside accountancy work, the firm operates as a Halifax Building Society agency in Anderson Street, Airdrie.
Our History
Benson Wood & Co has been part of the business community in Lanarkshire since 1936.
The firm has been here through everything this part of Scotland has been through: the industrial years, the difficult decades that followed the decline of heavy industry, and the reshaping of the local economy that came after.
The businesses we work with today are very different from the clients who walked through the door in 1936, but the firm’s reason for being here is the same: to give growing businesses the financial support and insight they need.
1973
Benson Wood & Co begins
Robin Wood, a former Queen’s Park amateur footballer, joins the firm and the practice becomes Benson Wood & Co.
1998
John Moffat joins as Partner
As regulation increases across the profession, John Moffat joins as a Partner and puts the systems and procedures in place to keep the firm legally compliant as an audit-regulated practice.
1999
John Carey & Co joins the firm
Benson Wood & Co acquires John Carey & Co, another established Airdrie practice, bringing more clients and a bigger team.
2020
Supporting clients through Covid
John Moffat takes over as sole owner just as Covid hits. Because the firm had already become fully digital, the team keeps running and supporting clients without disruption.
2021
Chris Wilson becomes Director
Chris Wilson is appointed director, strengthening the leadership team for the next stage of the firm’s growth.
2023
A new home in Bellshill
The firm moves to Belgrave Court in Bellshill, with modern offices and proper meeting spaces for clients and the team.
2026
90 years in Lanarkshire
Benson Wood & Co celebrates 90 years in Lanarkshire. It has been quite a journey, and the firm is in the best shape it has ever been.
